The brain contains approximately a hundred billion cells, with a hundred trillion connections among them. Injury, disease, and addiction can damage the way brain cells function, affecting: memory, behavior, thinking, problem solving, physical abilities, judgment - even personality. The Gymnasium for the Mind games and exercises utilize the brain's adaptive capacity - known as neuroplasticity - to reroute connections, relocate compromised areas of function, and strengthen remaining connections to maximize ability and quality of life.


Gymnasium for the Mind’s exercises and games also positively promote social interaction among participants, as well as their involved family members. One particular focus is on decreasing a person's feeling of isolation and, by association, depression, by encouraging involvement in group activities and providing assistance with development of social skills.



What is Recreational Therapy?

Gymnasium for the Mind’s “Recreational Therapy” is a planned, organized, and therapeutic group program designed to work in partnership with the current facilitator to help participants develop imagination, creativity, and social skills. Our program, designed for all ages, improves functioning and independence, as well as reduces the effects of an illness or disability. Those who take part in our workshops will benefit from participation in group activities that exercise essential cognitive functionality. Through these selective and specialized activities, Gymnasium for the Mind will:

  1. develop or help restore social function

  2. diminish fear of judgment

  3. restore self-confidence

  4. exercise the imagination

  5. enhance problem solving and fluid intelligence

  6. exercise physical capacities

  7. involve the participant in fun and beneficial activities


Our program is designed to meet the participant's capabilities, needs, and interests. Through our interactive games and exercises, the participant learns to:

  1. increase awareness of self and others

  2. be able to cope with symptoms

  3. reduce stress due to traumatic experiences

  4. enhance cognitive abilities

  5. enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of creativity, which promotes wellness

  6. help manage stress

  7. express feelings

  8. enhance memory

  9. improve communication

  10. promote physical rehabilitation


These exercises and games encourage the exploration of new interests and are a great self-reflection tool, developing a sense of hope that inspires the participants to adopt a healthy, active lifestyle. Our program provides the participants with an opportunity to enhance the skills they have been working on in other therapies, and learn skills necessary to assist them once they return home.
